Senate Bill 1128, that could add up to 32,000 people to the registry, will be considered by the Assembly Public Safety Committee on July 2. The hearing is:
CA State Capitol
Room 126
Tuesday, July 2
Will begin at 9 a.m.
Other bills will also be considered that day.
“It is extremely important that as many people as possible attend the July 2 hearing,” stated ACSOL Executive Director Janice Bellucci. “We must stop Senate Bill 1128 and attendance at this hearing may be the last opportunity to do so. Although we stopped a bill with only 15 people stating their opposition to it many years ago, more voices are needed now to stop a bill that is much worse.”
If enacted into law, Senate Bill 1128 would require individuals convicted of statutory rape (Penal Code Section 261.5) to register and that requirement would be applied retroactively. As a result, individuals convicted of this offense more than 30 years would be required to register for the first time. In the past and currently, individuals convicted of this offense are not required to register.
“For those unable to attend the committee hearing, ACSOL will identify other opportunities to oppose SB 1128 such as sending letters and making phone calls,” stated Bellucci. “Those details will be provided to you next week. The most effective way to stop SB 1128 is to attend the hearing, send a letter and make phone calls.”
It never ceases to amaze me the LOSERS in our government.
They make a REGISTRY, then they make a tiered REGISTRY to let people OFF the registry as they complain it costs to much etc… Now they wanna ADD MORE People to the registry…. Ill bet If this went through it would add SO MANY and get the numbers BACK UP over 100k… What total ignoramuses.
No doubt that b***h grove voted yes on it. She should lose her seat.
Of course, they put this last minute before a holiday weekend when airfare to get there is most limited.
Where is the hearing going to be?
[Moderator’s note: CA State Capitol Room 126]
I know out of state registrants don’t carry as much weight as California registrants, but I’ll do what I can from the east coast.
I have booked my flight. I will be there to stand up and speak out. Largely people convicted of this offense don’t know about this law. If we allow this law to pass their world will be rocked when they get a letter from DOJ telling them they have to register. We can’t let that happen.
Join me at the Capitol to say “I oppose this bill. And I whole heartedly ask you to vote NO.” If we can 30 or more people there to do this, I am positive we will be successful.
Janice, I commit to showing up. This bill would wipe out our progress in shrinking the size of the registry, so I look at losing a day of income as an investment in conserving our gains and being able to focus on our goals.
This is EASY to do. When they say “Anyone who opposes this bill come to the mic”, just walk up with the rest of us, get in line behind the mic, and when your turn comes say “My name is _____ from [city] and I strongly oppose this bill”, then sit back down with us.
That’s it! 5 seconds! In fact, they won’t let you say more. Janice will be the only one who gives a detailed reason why we oppose this bill.
That 5 seconds you invest makes a HUGE difference! No one used to oppose these terrible bills.
Once ACSOL started to come to fight them, it changed the battleground. Now much fewer bills like this survive.
I wish there were some way I could write or testify anonymously. My heart breaks for these 32K people! If politician wants to understand the pain, humiliation, and damage there are going to cause by forcing the equivalent of a small city to register, I would be happy to tell them my story.
I was a CA PC 288,2 (17b) misdemeanor no-post registrant (for 25 years) who was bumped to Tier 3 in 2017, as part of the new tiered registry law. Didn’t see it coming. I had to resign from the family business to protect their reputation, I’ve lost my roommate and his rental income, and I fear for my life and property as — bizarrely — I have been reclassified as one of the “worst of the worst. No need to tell anyone here how the job search in going. Meanwhile I am falling behind on my car payments and HOA dues.
When my fellow property owners find out about me, OMG. How will they ever be able to sell for top dollar or rent again? It makes me feel like a monster. The peace of the neighborhood will be disturbed for as long as I live there but if I sell, then who will offer me a room?
So yes, any politician who thinks that these 32K people will “roll with the punch,” (it’s just an “administrative act after all, right?), need only look at what happened to me, and my crime didn’t even involve sex, touching, intimidation, attempted lewdness, or false imprisonment.
It’s important that as many people show up as possible on July 2. Although we stopped a bill with only 15 people stating their opposition to it many years ago, more voices are needed now to stop a bill that is much worse. As stated above, the hearing will begin at 9 a.m. in Room 126 of the State Capitol in Sacramento. Please join us if you can!
I will be there. It is tremendously important to stop this horrible bill. If this passes, lives will be ruined, not only the registered person, but also so many family members. The legislators have no concept of the damage this bill will do to so many people if it passes. So much of the progress that has been made in the last few years will be wiped out if this dreadful bill becomes law.
Please, please come to Sacramento if you possibly can to help defeat this bill.
